At the beginning of 2015 a new system was created. The Express Entry system was created to be used to process applications for immigration to Canada from South Africa and around the world under four different immigration programs, including the Canadian Experience Class.
In order to qualify to apply under the Canadian Experience Class you need to meet all of the following criteria:
- Have at least 12 months of full-time (or an equal amount in part-time) skilled work experience in Canada in the three years before you apply in an O, A or B level occupation.
- You gained your experience in Canada on a valid Work Permit
- You meet the required language levels needed for your occupational level in each language ability as shown by an approved language test
Many people work part time while they are studying in Canada. The experience gained while on a study permit in Canada will not be counted towards your work experience on an application under the Canadian Experience Class.
Candidates seeking immigration to Canada from South Africa will need to complete their application under the online Express Entry system at which points they will be added to the Express Entry pool along with other applicants who are hoping to immigrate to Canada from South Africa and around the world.
Once you are in the Express Entry pool you will also enter into the Job Bank. Should a Canadian employer be looking for someone with your skill and experience but be unable to find a Canadian to do the job, they are able to search for a foreign candidate via the Job Bank. Once a foreign candidate has been found they will be able to offer them the position only after obtaining a positive Labour Market Impact Assessment. This is issued if the Canadian government agrees there is no Canadian available to do the job.
If you have a job offer and a positive Labour Market Impact Assessment you will have an advantage over others in the pool as this will add 600 points to your score. Once you have been selected from the Express Entry Pool based on your score you will have 60 days in which to complete the full Permanent Residency application forms and submit them along with the required documentation. You will have an outcome on your completed application within six months of your application being submitted.
There is no limit on the number of people who can enter into the pool and there is no deadline for Express Entry applications at this time. If you are not chosen within the first 12 months you will be able to re-enter the pool should you still meet the requirements.
