• Grandchild
• Brothers, sisters, nephews, nieces, or grandchildren who are orphaned AND are under 18 AND do not have a spouse or common-law partner

A Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident can also sponsor any one relative to Canada, regardless of age, but only if they do not have a living relative who is one of the following AND they do not have any other living relatives who are a Canadian Citizen, Canadian Permanent Resident or a Registered Indian:

• Your spouse/common-law/conjugal partner
• Your child
• Your parent
• Your grandparent
• Your sibling
• Your aunt or uncle

Who Can You Sponsor to Canada

While family reunification is a top priority for the Canadian Government, they do not allow individuals to sponsor any family member they wish to Canada. Only certain immediate family members can be sponsored under the Family Class.

We receive thousands of queries relating to these types of applications each year, with the top query being “can I sponsor my sibling?” Surprisingly, the answer is no you cannot sponsor your sibling under the family class in most instances. While siblings who are under 18 years of age and are orphaned can be sponsored, other siblings cannot. However, under other classes, such as the Economic Classes, having a sibling in Canada can add extra points to an individual’s application, but again it does not guarantee successful immigration.

Another important factor to keep in mind is that for certain family members, the Canadian government has a limit on the number of applications they will allow each year. For example, in 2016 the Canadian government only accepted 10,000 applications to sponsor parents and grandparents under the Family Class from around the world.
