Choosing a school in Canada

When choosing a school in Canada to study at, ensure that you select one that is approved by the Canadian Government. These institutions are known as a Designated Learning Institutions.

Any school which is recognized by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada will have a Designated Learning Institution Number. They should be able to provide you with this as proof. You will need to provide this Designated Learning Institution Number on your Study Permit application.

All primary and secondary schools are Designated Learning Institutions and do not require a Designated Learning Institution Number.

Designated Learning Institution Numbers begin with “O”. For example, the University of British Columbia’s Designated Learning Institution Number is O19330231062.

With thousands of post-secondary educational institutions to study at in Canada it can be difficult to know which one to choose. While this choice is a personal one based on the program you wish to study and where you wish to study in Canada, there is one important requirement that you must know before applying to any Canadian educational institution.

When searching for a Canadian Educational Institution to study at, you need to ensure that the educational institution you have selected is approved by the Canadian Government. These institutions are known as Designated Learning Institutions.

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada will only issue a Study Permit to those applicants who will be studying at a Designated Learning Institution. One other important thing to keep in mind when looking to study in Canada is the fact that being accepted into a Designated Learning Institution does not guarantee that you will be issued with a Canadian Study Permit. You can be accepted into a Designated Learning Institution and still have your application for a Canadian Study Permit refused.
